Andy Gill :: Biography
Founder member and producer of legendary Punk Band Gang of Four.
2008 was a busy and productive year for Andy. He spent a large part of the year producing material for the forthcoming Therapy album. Recorded in the band's Newcastle studio and mixed in Andy's studio in London, it heralds a return to form for the cult rockers.
He also devoted time in 2008 to writing and producing new material for Gang Of Four and producing singles for The Brownies.
Such is the global appeal of Gang of Four, that Andy spent much of 2007 working with some of the most exciting European talent on offer. He produced and mixing the Detlef Zoo album in his London studio for EMI Latvia. The album went straight to Number 1 on release in it's native country and spawned huge airplay hits for the band as well. later that year he mixed an album for the established Croation band Viva Gloria. Such was the success of this session, that in May, he went on to mix another of Croatia's leading indie talents Sun. Andy ended the year by producing the Spanish band We Are Standard, and continues with this project at the start of 2008.
2006 was an inspired year for Andy. He worked with many new UK bands, foremost of these are The Young Knives whose debut album was nominated for a highly coveted Mercury Music Award. The album heralded Top 40 singles and was much lauded by the music press on release. "Voices of Animals and Men" has firmly established the band in the indie scene and with this nomination, we are sure their appeal will go global.
Andy also spent time in 2006 working with buzz band The Maple State and worked on early recordings with the The Rumblestrips that caused the band to go on and sign a major deal with Island Records. He wrapped the year by recording new singles for The Mentalists.
Andy had an incredibly busy 2005, having to dedicate much of his time to promotional duties for Gang Of Four and the release of "Return The Gift", their acclaimed re-workings of some of the classic Gang Of Four material. During the year, he and the original band members did two sell out tours of America and a hugely successful European tour. Aside from gang duties, Andy also found time to produce numerous albums in 2005. For Gronland Records he produced the stomping punk rock of AK4711's debut album, as well as producing Asyl's record for Because Music in France. Andy began the year producing the Japanese band Polysics for Sony.
In 2005 it was also an honour for Andy to be asked to produce the Amnesty release celebrating the memory of John Peel. Featured artists on the record included Bloc Party, The Datsuns, The Futureheads, El Presedente and the Soleded Brothers, as well as the luminaries Robert Plant, Jeff Beck, Pete Shelley, Peter Hook and Dave Gilmour. In 2004 Andy produced The The Futureheads debut album for 679/Warner. It was released in July of that year to critical acclaim, and has already become a classic LP.
In 2004, he also produced the debut from Nordic rockers Infrasound.
In 2003 Andy also produced Killing Joke's eponymous album which received massive international acclaim on its release and was hailed as one of Kerrang’s favourite albums of that year.
In the past Andy has produced tracks by Blackmail for Warner Music and Polydor signing's Red Lemon, and Hell is for Heroes for EMI.
Past productions also include Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Michael Hutchence & Bono, Jesus Lizard and Bis.
