Max Richter:: Biography

Max Richter is an award winning composer and producer. He trained in composition and piano at Edinburgh University, The Royal Academy Of Music and with Luciano Berio in Florence.

"The Blue Notebooks", Max's solo CD released on cult label FatCat and featuring texts recorded by Tilda Swinton, was described by Pitchfork.com as "not only the finest record of the last six months, but the best Classical album of recent memory". It has been included in dozens of best of year lists.

Max has just produced the long awaited 2nd album from 60s folk legend Vashti Bunyan, which also features contributions from Joanna Newsom, Fourtet, Adem and Devendra Banhart, as well as a guest appearance by legendary arranger Robert Kirby. The new album recently received ***** in Mojo and was Record of the Week in The Times. Vashti's first album, Diamond Day, recorded by Joe Boyd in 1967, was recently voted by The Observer as one of the best 100 Albums of all time.

Max's 2002 CD "memoryhouse", recorded with the BBC Philharmonic and soloists Alexander Balanescu and Sarah Leonard, was described by Classic FM as "stunning".

Max is also known for his collaborations with Future Sound of London (The Isness and Dead Cities) and Roni Size (In the Mode).

Currently Max is collaborating on SIBERIA, a three-hour music and film odyssey, with Turner Prize Nominee Darren Almond. Commercials include his award winning score for Ridley Scott's Orange "Future Thoughts" film played by the London Symphony Orchestra as well numerous other campaigns.

Max is also known for his cutting edge installation and site specific work including collaborations with Dreamthinkspeak (with performances at the Barbican festival, Somerset House and the Brighton festival), and with Monika Bravo at the Tate Modern and Bryce Wolkovitz gallery, New York.

During his ten years with the award winning Classical ensemble Piano Circus, Max performed works by Arvo Part, Brian Eno, Kevin Volans, Jane Gardner, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe, Erkki Sven Tuur and Steve Reich among others. The group recorded five CDs under its exclusive deal with Decca/ARGO.

Max's own seven-piece ensemble tours widely, with recent performances in Japan, Sweden, Denmark and the UK.
