Biography
Mark de Clive-Lowe is a Tokyo-based producer, composer, pianist and multi-instrumentalist whose career has spanned jazz, soul, electronic music and club culture for more than three decades.
Born in New Zealand of Japanese and New Zealand heritage, Mark established himself in London during the formative years of the broken beat movement, becoming known for an approach to production that brought together live musicianship, jazz sensibility and electronic music. He has since lived and worked internationally, including extended periods in London and Los Angeles, before relocating to Tokyo.
As a producer, writer, musician and remixer, Mark has worked with artists including Jody Watley, Leon Ware, Sy Smith, Sandra St Victor, DJ Spinna, Shirley Horn, Chico Hamilton, Incognito, Danilo Perez, Nubya Garcia, Omar and Nils Wülker featuring Jill Scott, with releases appearing on labels including Verve, Impulse!, Columbia, Sony Music, Universal Jazz, Concord Jazz, BBE, Tru Thoughts, Ropeadope and Stones Throw.
Alongside his production work, Mark has built an extensive catalogue as an artist and bandleader, releasing more than 20 albums and projects under his own name and through collaborations including Rōnin Arkestra, The Politik, Nuvonesia, Dreamweavers and Bread & Souls. His work moves fluidly between acoustic and electronic environments, drawing on decades of experience as both a studio producer and performing musician.
Recent projects have increasingly connected Mark’s production and composition work with his Japanese heritage and wider interests in cultural memory and interdisciplinary collaboration. His “Heritage” albums explored his Japanese ancestry through jazz and electronics, while subsequent work has included original scores for interdisciplinary film projects and music for Sony Playstation’s “Ghost of Yōtei”.
Now based in Tokyo, Mark continues to work internationally as a producer, writer, remixer and composer, bringing together deep musicianship, electronic production and a collaborative, artist-centred approach to the studio.
